Dr. Aieta's Daily 5 Supplements
On a daily basis in my practice I get asked the question, "Dr. Aieta, what supplements do you personally take every day to maintain overall good health?"
My answer is that I change my supplement plan quite often based upon what symptoms I may be experiencing, the time of year, and my changing nutritional needs.
Dietary supplements can help fill in nutritional gaps and can protect your body against the occasional diet lapse. The majority of our food is grown in soil that is depleted of nutrients, making it very difficult to get all the vitamins and minerals required daily from our food alone. Not to mention, most of the fruits and vegetables that we are consuming are not locally grown so they are often ripened on the back of a truck or on the store shelf opposed to on the vine.
Types of Vitamins
Vitamins and minerals perform hundreds of roles in the body. They help strengthen bones, heal wounds, and support your immune system. They also convert food into energy, and repair cellular damage.
There are two types of vitamins for the body: water-soluble and fat-soluble. Water-soluble vitamins travel freely through the body, and excess amounts are usually excreted by the kidneys. The body needs water-soluble vitamins in frequent, small doses. Fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the body's cells and are not excreted as easily as water-soluble vitamins. They do not need to be consumed as often as water-soluble vitamins, although adequate amounts are needed.
